MARI WOKE UP EARLY the following day. It was still dark, but some of the things JD had said about her relationship with Amy had made it impossible for her to sleep peacefully. Maybe he had a point, but right now Amy needed them both. Mari just didn’t know how she could possibly draw away from Amy at a time like this.

JD, however, was another matter. Being forced to rely on each other was bringing them closer no matter how hard she tried to fight it. Mari had accepted her life, knowing she’d spend it alone, putting all her passion into her work. But these feelings for JD that had come unbidden reminded her how much she’d given up. It was slowly tearing her into pieces inside.

Mari dressed and left the bedroom. Not expecting to see anyone else out of bed yet, she jumped when she almost ran into JD coming out of the kitchen. “What are you doing up?”

“Couldn’t sleep, so I decided to put my time to good use. Bruce should be here shortly.”

“Has he been able to find out anything?”

“He’s been tracking down a few items for us, some things to help us investigate.”

“What kind of things?” Mari asked curiously. Before JD could answer, they heard a car coming up the drive. Mari pulled back the curtains and peered outside. Daylight was breaking and she could make out an off-white, medium-sized sedan. “That doesn’t look like the kind of thing Bruce would drive. It’s too...too...” She fumbled for the right word.

JD peered out. “Ordinary,” he finished for her. “You better wake Amy. We have to leave.”

With a quick nod, she hurried toward the back of the house. She was halfway down the hall when JD called out to her. “It’s okay. It’s Bruce driving. I just caught a glimpse of his face.” Moments later, JD opened the door to let Bruce inside. “Where did you get the wheels? Don’t tell me you finally passed adolescence!” JD baited.

“I was trying to do you a favor. I figured I’d pick up my nice little four-wheel-drive and leave you with this one. It suits your personality more—conservative, sorta blah, the kind that no one would give a second look to.”

Mari stood behind them and found herself envying the easy banter between the two men. Her best friend was in the hospital fighting for her life, and without her, Mari felt more alone than she had in a long time.

JD gestured to the couch. “Fill me in.”

“Well, let me start with the car. It’s rented, but I equipped it with one of my car phones. You can get hold of me anytime you want.” Bruce reached into the paper sack and placed a small buttonlike device, a tube of instant glue and something resembling a tape recorder on the coffee table. “Microphone and receiver. This is the most powerful unit I could get in a hurry. Its radius is listed as a quarter mile, but I figure that’s without obstructions in the way.
